Portland Harbour and Overcombe Corner, Weymouth


In a westerly the wind sweeps over chesil beach resulting in smooth water for most of Portland harbour. The area is enclosed and safe and can be sailed at high or low tide. There are two main access points:

  • the Ferry Bridge Marine car park which is on the left just after the bridge, right on the waters edge (where we normally meet).
  • If it's full you can park in the main public on the right, but that entails dodging traffic to get your equipment across the road to the grassy rigging up area. 
At the other end of Weymouth is Overcombe Corner with easy parking and access to the water. It is also a Windsurfing only beach! A flat water area when the wind comes from the west, but good for wave sailing in any wind with a S in it.

Follow the A31 at the end of the M3. At the end of the A31 head west on the A35 to Dorchester.

At the outskirts of Dorchester turn left onto the A354 Head towards Weymouth town centre then follow signs to Portland for the harbour or into the town centre and turn left at the sea front for Overcombe

For the harbour the Ferry Bridge Marine car park is £3.00 per day and the main car park is slightly more expensive. At Overcombe there is plenty of parking next to and on the beach.

There's a Cafe and toilets in the main car park at the harbour and a toilet in the marina car park, and at Overcombe there is a toilet and cafe. Mountain bike hire is also available at Overcombe.
